- Know Your IX is a campaign that aims to educate all college students in the U.S. about their rights under Title IX. Armed with information, sexual violence survivors will be able to advocate for themselves during their schools’ grievance proceedings and, if Title IX guarantees are not respected, file a complaint against their colleges with the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights.
- This campaign was built by a large collective of survivor-activists and allies seeking to share the expertise of their first-hand experience with violence, the law, and activism. On this site you’ll find resources on Title IX and the Clery Act, guidance on engaging in campus activism, hotlines for emergency care, suggestions for supporting a survivor, and personal advice in our “Dealing with…” section.
- Most anti-violence activism and media coverage assumes a “default” survivor who is a white, straight, able-bodied, legally documented, wealthy cis woman. Know Your IX is dedicated to resisting this tendency and building a movement centered on the experiences of real survivors whose experiences with violence occur at the intersection of various forms of oppression. We have worked hard to approach all our resources — not just those specifically addressing the challenges faced by survivors from marginalized groups — with this conviction. However, we recognize that such work can veer into the reductive: for example, we have written about racism and homophobia faced by survivors, but these forces converge in different ways in different people’s lives based on their particular circumstances. The only way to combat this tendency is to include as many voices as possible through this platform. Toward this end, we encourage you to submit your own advice for viewers and any suggestions for our organizers to [email protected].
