My former student, friend, and co-writer Neal Hebert is writing a fascinating dissertation in Theatre about how various versions masculinity have been formed and contested in Professional Wrestling (e.g. Georgeous George, the Exotic Adrian Street, Golddust, etc.) .
I don't know if the video at right is a shoot or part of some brilliant new work, but in either case Neal's going to have some extra writing to do.
Even though the owners of WWE are pretty Republican they are smart enough to know that the business will die if they try to make a point at the expense of making a buck. So you can track public opinion about all sorts of things by following various subversive wrestling storylines. This one will be a doozy.
I don't think it's a work. Current industry baby face John Cena has publicly spoken in favor of Young and stated that his brother is gay. I would love if that entered into story line and actually made Cena three dimensional, not just the sort of post 9/11 theatrical manifestation of vapid American good intentions that he's hitherto been. I think that there's a real possibility that just as tea party anti-immigrant characters are now heels we are going to see some homophobic heels for the first time in the history of the sport.
