Here's something quite different today! Today I’m posting what is perhaps the most famous classical music piece composed by a Brazilian, namely ‘Trenzinho Caipira’, the Tocata of the second movement of Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras. It was composed in 1930, and the whole idea is to emulate the noises made by a train by means of the instruments in the orchestra. Almost as famous is the fifth movement of the same Bachianas, ‘Aria’, here sung by Kiri te Kanawa. Villa-Lobos is without a doubt the best-known Brazilian classical composer thus far, and is notable in particular for incorporating traditional folk rhythms and melodies into his music.
(Apologies for the short post today: I'm in the middle of the Groningen Graduate Conference at the moment.)
