Inspired by the success of the already existing Societies for Women in Philosophy (UK, USA, Canada -- and it seems that there are others in the making), we are now launching the Dutch version of the Society (possibly also to include the Dutch-speaking parts of Belgium in the near future): SWIP.NL. We will have our inaugural meeting on April 10th 2013; the announcement for the meeting is below. All are very welcome to attend!
We also very much welcome offers of help to get SWIP.NL up and running, and thus to promote the position of women in the philosophy profession in the Netherlands and beyond.
Also, notice that Jennifer Saul (Sheffield and SWIP-UK), one of the speakers at the launch, will also deliver the first annual Aspasia Lecture the next day in Groningen. See the flyer for further details.
10 April, 14.30 - 17.00
Why are there so few female professors in philosophy? For what reasons are female philosophers rarely included in the philosophical canon? Why are there still philosophical conferences without keynotes by women?
SWIP.NL is a trade union in formation focused on the interests of women working in the field of academic philosophy. The organization is modeled after the English SWIP (Society for Women in Philosophy) and focuses on the Dutch-speaking region.
SWIP.NL seeks to represent the interests of women in philosophy in the broadest sense of the word, by:
- Facilitating cooperation opportunities between women in philosophy;
- Supporting the visibility of women working in philosophy;
- Promoting philosophy by women in past, present and future;
- Promoting initiatives aimed at redressing discrimination of women in philosophy.
On 10 April 2013, 14.30 - 17.00, SWIP.NL will organize an inaugural meeting at the University of Amsterdam. All are welcome!
Initiators are: E. Brouwer, C.Dutilh Novaes, A.Halsema, M.Prange, K.Vintges
