I've never denied being a huge fan of Caetano Veloso; a large chunk of my childhood and my teens was spent listening to his music, and still now it remains an important part of my musical and emotional life. Caetano turned 70 this week, on August 7th, and to celebrate his birthday I am posting two of his songs: the first is 'O ciume', of his 1987 album Caetano, and the second is a more recent recording from his 1999 live album Prenda Minha, the song 'Sozinho'. The first one was one of my late father's favorite songs; it beautifully captures the general spirit of a particular region in Brazil -- around the Sao Francisco river, which cuts across the inner part of the states of Minas Geraes and Bahia (my father was from the north of Minas Geraes). The second song (written by composer Peninha) became the hit of the year in Brazil in 1999/2000, and showcases Caetano's ability to please the masses with music of the highest quality.
