Reading the comments on my Higgs boson and American UnExceptionalism post, I was struck by the assumption made by some commenters that everybody, no matter where in the world, was aware that yesterday was American Independence Day and that every allusion to American values or American prestige made yesterday was an attempt to mark it.
The CERN announcement made it onto television news yesterday. Perhaps that was no coincidence and the European scientific establishment was gloating. If so, it was lost on me.
And, dear reader, I hope your first response to what I just said was NOT: "But this is an American blog. It's a reasonable assumption in context." It isn't and it isn't.
