On Philos-L, I came across the announcement for the following conference to take place in Lund, which at first caught my attention because of the funny acronym: G.I.R.L., which stands for ‘Games, Interactive Rationality and Learning’. Now, as it turns out, there is another aspect in which this is a G.I.R.L. conference, check out the (preliminary) list of invited speakers:
Alexandru Baltag (ILLC, Amsterdam, Netherlands)
Nina Gierasimczuk (University of Groningen, Netherlands)
Vincent F. Hendricks (University of Copenhagen, Denmark)
Kevin Kelly (Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh PA, US)
Paul Pedersen (Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh PA, US)
Ruth Poproski (Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh PA, US)
Patricia Rich (Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh PA, US)
Sonja Smets (University of Groningen, Netherlands and ILLC, Amsterdam)
(Full disclosure: some of them are or were colleagues of mine.) It is worth noticing that this is a rather ‘formal’ area, and yet it seems to be blooming with a lot of female talent. Let there be more G.I.R.L. conferences then! (In the second sense I alluded to above.)
(Also, here I feel comfortable to remark that it is not an all-white conference either, given that I am personally acquainted with Vincent Hendricks and have discussed his racial self-identification with him. I make no guesses concerning the race/ethnicity of the four people on this list who I do not know personally.)
