I had a request to post on Os Novos Baianos; they were the uber-hippies of Brazilian music, even by 1970s standards. They recorded quite a few records in the 1970s, but the most famous of them is their 1972 record, Acabou Chorare, which was ranked the number 1 Brazilian album of all times by the Rolling Stone ranking. Many of the members of the band later went on to have successful solo careers: Pepeu Gomes, Baby Consuelo and Moraes Moreira. As I'm a bit short in time today, I'll be brief with the text and go straight to two of the great songs from Acabou Chorare.
The first is 'Brasil Pandeiro', composed in 1940 by Assis Valente for Carmen Miranda, who then decided not to record it. The song was then recorded by Anjos do Inferno, but is now by far best known on the Novos Baianos version. The second is 'Preta Pretinha', possibly the greatest Novos Baianos hit ever. They are both absolute classics!
