Today I'll post two songs by Os Mutantes, to mark the visit of my friend James Woodbridge to the Netherlands (he's sitting next to me in the train as I type!). Besides being an accomplished philosopher, James is a celebrity in the Las Vegas music scene, where he is a co-organizer of the Neon Reverb Festival. He is a big fan of Os Mutantes, and we went to one of their 2000s comeback concerts together, in NYC in 2006.
The songs are 'Batmacumba' (in fact composed by Gilberto Gil) and 'Cantor de Mambo', where they allegedly make fun of Sergio Mendes, the 'Mambo singer' in question. There are numerous songs by Os Mutantes that deserve being posted, but these two are pretty good examples of their, how shall I put it, mojo.
