The next few entries are photo essays, triggered by this post's invocation of the phalanx and some earlier posts on crowd control technological "assemblages" (to use the Deleuzoguattarian term). The title comes from this book, which I highly recommend. I can't relay all the themes, but among them is the hyper-masculine body, the "hard body."
Something else that I'd like to suggest is the interplay between popular culture fiction and news photography. You'd have to do a systematic study to see which ones are published, but a quick googling of "London riots 2011" brought up the ones on the right on the first page.
To save bandwidth, I'm breaking the essay up into several posts over the next few days. The first juxtaposition is a cliché, but that's part of the point, isn't it?
