A few months ago I called attention to (shall we say) some peculiarities of the ESF journal rankings. Recently I had occasion to revisit the website. I note two further peculiarities--one quite general, and one very local. First, now if you go to the ESF website you eventually hit this following page. It contains a disclaimer that must rank high in hypocritical performative contradictions: "The content of the pages of this website is for your general information and use only and is not intended to address the specific circumstances of any particular individual or entity. More specifically it is not intended as bibliometric information for use in assessment processes of individual candidates, be it for positions, promotions, research grant awards etc." We built a bomb, don't blame us if somebody uses it...
Second, if you go to the philosophy of science ranking, and look under top international journals in 2011, you will find that the Vienna Circle Institute Yearbook is listed among these. Now I love these volumes and would be thrilled to be published in them. But to call it a journal is misleading; the series contains edited volumes available (to the best of my knowledge) as hardbacks only. I have checked the Yearbook's website and it does not seem like one can even submit a paper to it. (Springer publishes it in a book-series, most of which are not treated as journals by ESF.)
