I'm a bit pressed for time these days, so rather than writing a long-ish column, this week I will post two versions of another classic (after last week's instalment) by the awesome Jorge Ben Jor, 'Taj Mahal' (first version appeared in 1972, in the album 'Ben'). The song in the first video below appeared in his 1976 album 'Africa Brasil', and the second one is a duet with the almost-just-as-awesome Gilberto Gil; they are both extremely skilled guitar players, which is made abundandly clear in this version.
One interesting fact about the song is that Jorge Ben won a plagiarism lawsuit against Rod Stewart, whose song 'Da ya think I'm sexy' was clearly 'inspired', so to say, by 'Taj Mahal's catchy melody. But of course, the original version, 'Taj Mahal', is waaaaaay better anyway...
