My brother informs me that the January edition of Mojo has a big feature on Neil Young. Among other things, they asked a bunch of musicians (of all kinds of persuasions) to choose their favorite Neil Young songs, and came up with a Top 50 list (for the full list and a corresponding Spotify play list, see here). The Top 10 were:
10 – Everybody Knows This is Nowhere (Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, 1969)
9 – The Needle and the Damage Done (Harvest, 1972)
8 – Mr. Soul (Buffalo Springfield Again, 1967)
7 – Down By the River (Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, 1969)
6 – Helpless (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young- Déjà Vu, 1971)
5 – Like a Hurricane (Weld, 1991)
4 – Only Love Can Break Your Heart (After the Gold Rush, 1970)
3 – Heart of Gold (Harvest, 1972)
2 – Cinnamon Girl (Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, 1969)
1 – After the Gold Rush (After the Gold Rush, 1970)
I haven't had the chance to check out the whole feature of Mojo yet (maybe there's a pdf of it available somewhere; anyone?), but as it turns out drafting lists of the Top 5 Neil Young songs is a 'game' my husband and I frequently play (even before we read Nick Hornby's High Fidelity). Drafting such a list for Neil Young in particular is a real challenge, given his gigantic production and the amazing number of great songs he's delivered through the years; that's exactly what makes the game so much fun. So, inspired by the Mojo article, I thought New APPS readers might want to join the game: what are your Top 5 Neil Young songs? Here are mine (that is, of my present time-slice in any case), in no particular order:
Cortez the Killer (Zuma, 1975)
Old Man (Harvest, 1972)
On the Beach (On the Beach, 1974)
Harvest Moon (Harvest Moon, 1992)
Quit (Don’t say you love me) (Are you passionate?, 2002)
My choices are not particularly controversial, except perhaps for the last item. But man, this is hard! Just now I'm already sorry that I'm not including 'Like a Hurricane' and a few others, but what could I possibly take out? See, it's a fun game...
