Brian Leiter has a useful evaluation of Ronald Reagan. But I think we have to give Reagan more credit on his lack of imperial ambition. Compared to nearly all 20th century other US Presidents, Reagan was extremely cautious about going to war and deploying troops abroad. (Maybe the ill fated Marine peace keeping mission in Lebanon made him more cautious.) He also had a surprising interest in total nuclear disarmament--catching Gorbachev and his own advisors (!) off-guard.
