This week I am cheating a bit. (Lots of travel, so I went with my first choice.) This week's winner fits the official rules for most-underrated philosopher of the week. Yet, she works in a research intensive department, which is especially strong in history and philosophy of life sciences.
Nevertheless, Anya Plutynski is a worthy winner. She is one of the world's leading young philosophers of biology, and combines this with a strong interest in the history of biology and the history of philosophical reflection on biology. While this is not so unusual among philosophers of biology, she also writes on philosophy of education and on policy matters (pertaining to the environment and cancer). My favorite piece of hers is this brilliant paper on Fischer, but I have to admit I have not followed the ongoing controversy since.
