A principle well worth observing. I never liked it when people referred to the police as pigs. It was said that they acted like pigs and deserved the name. But as far as I know calling the cops pigs, or worse names yet, has not changed their behavior except for the worse. You can refuse, as Rev. Stoneking says, to see people merely as enemies; that is an exercise of freedom. Who in those terrible videos is really suffering (so a Stoic might say, or Kant): the students being pepper-sprayed, or the cop who has degraded himself into a mere slave? I don’t think nonviolence is the best strategy in all instances. But we see here how powerful it can be.
